The influx of new music has slowed down a bit over the last months, tons of work means less time to browse my favorite sites for new tunes. Yet my Twitter stream provides me with the occasional delicacy, well, and then sometimes I just have to treat myself to a mini time-out – preferably spent on some music blogs.
It rarely happens that you ask your cab driver to turn up the volume, does it? But that’s what I did when we were on our way from the airport into the city of Athens. He proudly told me it was his favorite radio station (best 92.6) and with the speakers turned up, I was able to successfully shazam the gripping song “Untitled love” by Still Going (Soundcloud).
Besides, Still Going Records has more gems in their collection, check out their remix of Bryan Ferry’s “Shameless” (Soundcloud) or “Spaghetti Circus” (Soundcloud), too.
Next up on my favorites list: Rhye. Another anonymous duo, this time from Los Angeles. It seems to be the latest trend to create a little mystery around a band’s identity, but if their music sounds like this, I don’t care – these subtle melodies and an incredible mellow voice will catch you off guard. Rumor has it the singer is male, now isn’t that hard to believe?
Listen to “Open” (Soundcloud) and, my favorite, “3 days” (365 Days of Music).
With Beirut a long-time favorite released the perfect summer video two weeks ago. If you are currently chained to your desk and in dire need for summer vibes and visual relexation, “The Rip Tide” (Vimeo) feels like a four minute vacation.
Amy Winehouse has left this world, yet her songs are here to stay – and deservedly so. It may sound odd at first, but could her songs pair well with hiphop? Since the surprise collaboration with Nas on last year’s tribute album “Lioness: Hidden Treasures” there was prove (“Like Smoke”) and now Terry Urban presents an hour long stream featuring both artists (Mixcloud via Earmilk).
You like Poliça? Then Hurricane’s “Mr Ms” (Vimeo) is a safe bet, although the video is the exact opposite of the above mentioned vacation – think visual overload. Nevertheless a catchy voice and superb song.
And the last shout-out goes to Freunde von Freunden, especially to their regular mixtapes featuring various DJs (Soundcloud). Their most recent one was a collaboration with Markus Reuter and it contains numerous of my current favorite tracks.
As always I can’t wait to read about YOUR current favorites – please leave a note in the comment section :)
