Those little things are mirabelles. It is a varity of plums (thatswhy they taste like them). I use them for cakes, marmelade, jelly or many, many things you can do with plums. Haven't you ever heared of mirabelle liqueur in Austria? :-)

das sind Mirabellen, würde ich sagen. Wässriger als Marillen und auch nicht sooo aromatisch wie Aprikosen. Gibt's auch in rot, haben wir als Kinder immer vom Baum gegessen. Ein Marmeladeversuch wäre es wert. Oder ein Röster?

This is a new one to me, but they are quite possibly the most charming little fruits that I've ever seen. I imagine they might be nice in a tart on top of a layer of walnut or hazelnut cream? Or perhaps in some sort of cinnamon scented chutney? I'm so curious to see what you do with them!

They're on Wikipedia as a "Mirabelle". Jam seems to be the limit!

Das sind Mirabellen! Wir haben selbst früher so einen Baum im Garten gehabt und die Früchte meistens einfach nur genascht. Kann mir aber auch Marmelade oder Mus daraus sehr gut vorstellen - oder vielleicht sogar eine Art Zwetschgendatschi (nur in gelb)?

Hi, überall in den Bauerngärten sind diese wohlschmeckenden "Mirabellen" jetzt reif.
Es ist eine Pflaumenart und ich koche daraus Marmelade. Da sich die Mirabellen mit dem Kirschentkerner leicht entkernen lassen, und die Früchte während des Einkochens wunderbar zerfallen ist das eine schnelle Möglichkeit große Mengen zu verarbeiten.

Delicious, but, as you can see, so tiny! We've cooked them down whole, then strained out the seeds and made preserves or syrup with the remaining fruit puree.

Die sehen aus wie wilde Haferschlehen, die mit den Mirabellen verwandt sind. Gibts bei uns in Österreich häufig wildwachsend. Sehr gut für Marmelade!!!!

This little things are mirabelles, a sort of plum. I use them for cakes, marmelade, jelly, and - of course - you can make liqueur from them (never heared of it?).

they look like tiny Aprikose - perhaps in some manner like you'd use those? a tart would showcase them nicely, perhaps with some frangipane or a brown butter batter? i think no matter what you bake, you cannot go wrong!

So einen Baum haben wir auch im Garten, würde auch sagen dass es Mirabellen sind...meine Mom kocht immer Marmelade aus ihnen...bei uns sind sie immer sehr wässrig...

hmm...they look an awful lot like loquats. and i like them fresh in salads, but they're also great in jams.

I don't know about the "best way" to use them but I like to put them in salads, you could just use them as any fruit in pies or cakes, make jam.

I love those! They make best jams and preserves. I thought they are called mirabellen in German. I think they have a dark skinned cousins just as delicious.

During my childhood we had also a Griacherl-tree. My mom mad always such a delicious jam out of them. Unfortunately the tree didn`t survive and I am longing for this jam now and then....

Ich kenne Kriecherl als Schnaps. Und man kann sie entsaften und mit Mineralwasser erfrischend als Schorle genießen. Erst kürzlich so in Österreich probiert.

My grandparents had something similar in their yard. They used them to make brandy or to just eat them fresh. They never made anything fancier with them because they are harder to pit than cherries, but if you have the patience, the sky is the limit. How about plum clafoutis?

Mirabelles! If I can stop popping them in my mouth simply, then I love to use them in tarts. I actually just made a triple-plum galette the other day, spreading a layer of mirabelle jam on the tart crust and then topping that with reine claudes and little purple plums too.

Yes, they are called mirabelles in French. They are common in Romania, where they're called "corcodushe". They are very good for jam. Romanians use them in soups when they are still green and sour. They give a delicious soury-fruity flavour to the soup.

In Bayrisch-Schwaben werden die "Zipper" oder "Zipperla" genannt. Meine Mutter und jetzt auch ich haben die immer eingeweckt bzw. "leise" gekocht. Dann kann man nämlich die harte Haut abziehen und der Kern flutscht wie von allein raus. Bei uns ist das eine klassische Beilage zu schwäbischen Mehlspeisen oder auch Grießbrei oder Pudding...

Oh, ich liebe Mirabellen! Hab ich aber schon ewig nicht mehr gegessen. Schmeckt lecker pur direkt vom Baum, als Mirabellenkompott zu Pfannkuchen und ähnlichem, als Marmelade, oder Du lässt Schnaps draus brennen.

Hallo liebe Nicky, wie wär's mit einer Mostarda, schön pikant gewürzt, ich denke Lavendelblüten würden auch gut dazu passen, oder frischer Ingwer. Habe unlängst die Kombination Marille-Kamille gelesen, das kann ich mir auch für Kriecherln gut vorstellen. Falls Du Interesse hast Mostarda (Beigabe zu Käse) zu kochen, helfe ich gerne mit einem Rezept aus. Allerherzlichste kulinarische Grüsse von Wien nach München!

People have already mentioned many uses for them. Personally, I think they'd be great in a strudel with Quark (Topfen) and these babies.

Oh, they look like ground cherries. We found some in Montreal & smuggled back to the states. We made them into a Clafoutis - it was wonderful!

in Poland we don't have mirabelles in gardens, they rather grow wild, sometimes near the streets and parks. I'm giving you the recipe from a great polish blog "Bea w kuchni": http://www.beawkuchni.com/2008/08/pita-pora-roku.html

She puts a sweet shortcrust in tart pans and than bake them for 15 minutes in 180-200 C degrees. Then she puts ground almonds on the shortcrust, on the top stoned and halved mirabelles and she pours it with the mixture of double cream, egg yolk, sugar and vanilla. In the end Bea adds a little muscovado sugar on top and bakes her tarts for 20 minutes in 170C degrees.

Hi Nicky, I just made a similar discovery in my backyard - even though these little plums could certainly be mirabelles, I think they are something different - more of an "heirloom" kind of plum. There's a variety of plums, such as cherry plums or "Zierpflaume" (edible). There're absolutely perfect in a yeast buns with a crumble topping and a bit of sugar icing. That's one of the flavours of my childhood, my aunt used to bake those for me during my countryside holidays - of course I had to pick enough mirabelles first, and that was part of the whole fun!

that's funny! my father who grew up in bavaria always called them kriacherl, too! we always had them like that, not made into jam or cakes ...

Ja, Mirabellen sind das. Die sind etwas außer Mode gekommen. Ich leben in einem ehemaligen Obstanbaugebiet und die Baume stehen hier zu Hauf in der Landschaft. Hat man oft für Schnaps verwendet. Mein Freund hat vor zwei Wochen Marmelade darauß gemacht, wie meine Oma früher. Lecker!

in austria they are called "ringlotten" ... I also remember them from my grandparent's garden. they have a lovely sweet-sour taste, however I wouldn't really cook them.

So wie's aussieht, Mirabellen, aber da gibt's eh verschiedene Sorten. Meine Großeltern hatten einen Baum, Oma hat Kompott aus den Früchten gekocht (sehr schön mit Vanilleeis), oder Datschi gebacken, manschmal mit Zwetschgen gemischt. Bzw. frisch vom Baum runter :-) Würde ich gern mal wieder essen, aber die sieht man leider nirgends (nehme gerne Tipps! München), und jemand mit Baum hab ich nicht mehr...

In Northern Italy we call this amoi or amoli, apparently the real name is Mirabolano, which clearly is the same as mirabelle. as a kid I used to have wild tree behind my building and in summer we'd eat tons of it, espcially when they were still sour. I've never seen them in shops, and never cooked them. To add my voice to the clatter - those are mirabelles. You get yellow and sometimes also green ones. I personally love them- they're a little tarter than plums. Great for making plum cake - something like pflaumenkucken (sp?), or clafoutis, or burnished golden on top of a baked tart.

it's n italian, but you'll see that the scientific name states that are from a plum tree (prunus) that makes fruits like cherries (cerasifera)!

Also, ich bin auch der Ansicht, dass das keine Mirabellen sondern eher Kirschpflaumen sind. Die gibt's auch in Dunkel. Meistens schmecken sie nicht so wahnsinnig gut, wenn sie aber schön reif sind, kann man sie so verwenden wie Mirabellen: Also z.B. Schnaps, Kuchen, Marmeladen, Eingemachtes o.ä.
Ich komme ursprünglich aus dem Schwarzwald und da heißen die kleinen Dinger Zibärtle.

Best use would be an eau-de-vie, but since the making of it would be too tedious at home :-) you could just go the liqueur way: cut the mirabelle up, put them in 96% alkohol and let steep for a month or two in a dark and cool place. Filter, dilute with water to around 38% alc, add sugar if necessary, basta!
You could also cook with them, they go very nice with duck!

Wir machen aus Mirabellen am liebsten eine Tarte nach einem Rezept von Freunden aus dem Elsass: Mürbteig bzw. pate brisée, darauf Mirabellen und ein Guss aus Eiern, Zucker, Milch und Sahne.

Miralebellen sind nach Himbeeren das beste Sommer-Obst! und werden am besten frisch gegessen. leider wird einam ab einer bestimmten Menge schlecht davon.
Auf Obstkuchen machen sie sich auch ganz gut! :)

Die gibt es hier neuerdings überall im Bioladen und auf dem Markt, da heißen sie auch Kirschpflaume. Mirabellen schmecken besser, finde ich. Man kann sie aber sehr gut zu Marmelade verkochen, am besten mit ein paar Zweigen Verveine, das hebt den etwas unentschlossenen Geschmack der kleinen Hybriddinger.

Mirabellen schmecken als Marmelade ganz köstlich. Aber nur Gelierzucker 1:3 verwenden und evtl. etwas Limettensaft dazu, denn dieses Jahr sind sie besonders süß. Am Wochenende gab es bei uns eine Mirabellentarte nach einem etwas abgewandelten Rezept von Eric Kayser mit Mandelguss. Lecker...

I bought Mirabelles yesterday at the Viktualienmarkt. These are my favourite plums. Always delicious and simple : La Tarte aux Mirabelles...and Marmelade of course!

i totally bought the same fruit at a fruit stand near my house and thought they were cherries. i was planning on using them in a pie but it turned out they were not cherries but very sour plums. i have no idea what to do with them and they are now sitting in my fridge with no idea of what to do. hope you find something yummy to do for some much need inspiration <3

Das sind Haferschlehen, auch Prunelles (Frankreich), Zibärtle (Baden), Zibarten (Schwaben), Kriacherl (Bayern/Österreich). Sie sind kleiner, fester und aromatischer als Mirabellen, haben ein feine Säure. Sie können zu Kompott oder Marmelade, wahrscheinlich auch zu Chutneys verkocht werden, ich könnte mir auch eine Fleichbeilage drauis vorstellen (mit Schalotten und Rosmarin). Aber unübertroffen ist der Schnaps davon!
Kuchen geht auch, eher versunken im Rührteig (als "Spuckuchen"), für Datschi müssten die rohen(!) Früchte entsteint werden, das geht nicht, der Stein sitzt zu fest.

Ich habe gerade einen Korb voll Mirabellen verarbeitet. Sie entwickeln ihren Geschmack beim Kochen. Gut dazu passt Bourbon Vanille oder auch Zimt und Kardamom.
Ich habe Marmelade eine Tarte, Kompott und heute Clafoutis daraus gemacht.

I loved picking wild Mirabelles when I lived in Germany. My favorite way to use them was in jam. I used to make it with vanilla bean and Gewürtztraminer. It was heaven. Too bad I can't find those little lovelies in the U.S.!

My other favorite recipe was a mirabelle custard tart with a brown butter crust. Also quite delicious and very simple to make!

Wow, I have 4 mirabella plum trees growing in my garden & have just harvested & made a beautiful dark golden jam from these little fellows. I live near Glenshee ski resort in Scotland, so very hardy little fruits!

They're called 'alõtša' in Estonian and I've always translated them as Mirabella plum.
Make lovely jam and juice, and ripe fruit are delicious just as they are, eaten raw ;)

ringlos. ich kenne sie als ringlos. mirabellen dürfen süß,leicht mehlig sein. ringlos sind eher sauer. und ich habe massenhaft marmelade davon gekocht. mit pirsichen gemischt, da sie süße brauchen, und etwas zimt. sehr, sehr lecker!

In Mittelfranken heissen diese Dinger Zipperli. Ich habe sie aber auch schon in rot gesehen. Mein Mann bäckt damit Kuchen oder macht Kompott daraus, als Angesetzter Liklör schmecken sie aber auch fantastisch.
In Frankonia these arecalled Zipperli. My husband bakes them or stewes them and likes to eat them with pudding, but as a homemade liquor they are fantastic as well.

Yes, in Poland name's MIRABELKI, it grows almost everywhere, and I love the compote with them! If u have a lot of them, make some jam, tart and compote :) And invite friends for mirabelki party :)

Now, I remember that my mother used to jar the Mirabellen pretty much like cherries or plums. The made a good dessert during the winter months.

They are very cute little fruits, I've never seen them before, but I imagine they're very sweet and tasty.

in romania they are called "corcoduse" and are used for making an alcholic drink known as tuica or palinka. It's very strong and flavored. They are also used for some kind of sour balkanic soup or another while they are still green

I just found those little beauties (although purple) in my grannies garden. The very first year in decades that that tree has made fruit. And lots of it! I didn't even know she had a plum tree. So I was looking for a nice recipe and stumbled upon this post. Great! I think I'm going for a Zwetschgendatschi, jam... Maybe I also freeze some for the cold winter days? And who knows when that tree is willing to give us some joy again.
