In upgrading from 5.2 to 5.3 of cforms II, I first:
- made a backup of wp-content/plugins, wp-content/themes, wp-includes/js
- Disabled cforms II
- moved old plugins/contactforms
- installed new plugins/contactforms
- Re-enabled cforms II
Immediately thereafter, when I try to access anything in the dashboard, i.e., http://www.myblog.com/wp-admin, I get the following error:
Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occured!
Please try again later.
I've swapped back in the previous plugins/contactforms, indeed I've restored the backup versions of wp-content/plugins, wp-content/themes, wp-includes/js but no joy.
Could cforms II have written somewhere else, or could it have "tweaked" the database?
I'm stumped.
Thanks,

OfflineBill, sorry to hear you ran into issues as part of the cforms update.
I've not seen an ERR 500 before and can not image a reason why it should behave that way based on your upgrade. Any DB write accesses occur in areas where they're absoutely non critical.
The ERR 500 seems to be more related to file access issues, e.g. files missing, access rights (.htaccess) etc.
What happens when you remove cforms altogether, does the ERR still occur?

Wow. Once I remove "contactforms" I no longer get the error and my Dashboard works now.
I had restored a previous version that I though would work.
So, it looks like there is something either in the ~/wp-content/plugins/contactforms that either was bad, or was interacting badly with something else.
Comments?

No clue. Maybe you want to re-download and try with a "fresh zip file"?
Could it be a .htaccess issue (top level)?
Or some file permissions related problem (after unzipping)?

I installed the older cforms 5.2 and I get the same Error 500. Curious.
By the way, a couple of years ago, I enjoyed the Starkbier Festival at the Loewenbraeukeller in Munich.

That's always a good to be around in Munich when it happens. It's dangerous though… ;-)
Still getting the 500' ?
