I'm using cforms for a project and am having a "required" dropdown/select with the first option "- please select nationality -" and was wondering if I can highlight the select if first option is selected… in other words to warn the user if he/she didn't select her nationality from the dropdown…

Hey, we did it using jQuery, if dropdown first option is selected we changed the dropdown class to error and not allowing the form to submit… not an ideal solution but it works :)

There is a very simple fix. In the Input Field Settings box for your drop down list, put a minus symbol - in the Option value (transmitted) box to the right of your first line.

Yep I had the same problem, the minus symbol worked for me, now validating that field.
