When we travel I always keep an eye out for at least one special dish or recipe that I can recreate at home and add to my ever-growing recipe repertoire. Similar to how I connect songs with places we have been to or certain occasions, food does the same thing for me: it will instantly bring back those fun days and sweetest memories with the very first bite or spoon, scientifically - if there was such as thing – it’d be the palate memory effect. Our latest trip to the Maldives wasn’t anything short of neither traditional fare nor exquisite cuisine, and yet the dish I was dying to try back home, was the soup that was the prelude to our late night dinner, shortly after we reached the island Hadahaa.

René Redzepi, Noma

Zen. That’s the word that came to mind when we entered the second, larger kitchen upstairs at Noma and noticed six chefs and cooks around a table, silently but determined cleaning micro-greens and herbs. It’s a picture that beautifully showcases Noma’s approach to food and cooking.

The veils can finally be lifted: Our short trip to Copenhagen recently was all in light of – no real surprise here though – NOMA. Following an assignment by NOWNESS to interview René Redzepi is something you simply can’t turn down – even when void of an actual dining experience. We connected very well and the overall time we got to spend with René on his houseboat surpassed our expectation by far.

Popovers & Doris Day

Some recipes need a second chance. Sometimes, all it takes is a different list of ingredients or change of environment. Both can act as a breath of fresh air to a food experience you hastily labeled unspectacular – or simply dull. Popovers are my prime example here, I had some rather unsatisfying samples more than ten years ago on a road-trip through Georgia and have done my best to not give them the time of day ever since. Until our recent stay in Carmel-by-the-sea, where we had booked a room at the Cypress Inn, co-owned by Hollywood icon Doris Day. (confession: I love Doris Day movies. Always have, always will!)

Do you Californians know how good you have it?

It’s not like we had much of a choice – no blue or red pill- , but after our recent trip to sunny California, including some road-trip side-adventure, getting settled again in Munich turned out to be a real challenge.

Two things: iffy weather and more snowflakes. But let’s skip the still cold weather here in Munich and talk sunshine, beaches and fantastic food for a short recap of our trip.
