Singapore - Expect the unexpected

This was one of the many lines delivered by occasionally funny Singaporean taxi drivers, that made us laugh and ponder about what exactly the message was supposed to mean. Because – truth be told – our latest trip to Singapore was everything we hoped it would be. And then some. (…including an ugly cold I caught as soon as we returned from the hot humid temperatures to embrace the nasty weather situation here…)

Can our trip be summed up in few words? Let’s try: We ate, we ate and then we ate some more. We fell in love with this cosy place, the tropical climate, the diversity of cuisines, cooking styles and the buzzing food markets. Thanks to our friend Kai and well-informed fellow foodbloggers we knew exactly what was not to be missed. And then there was the most amazing Thai dinner we shared with Aun, Su-Lyn, Lynn, Willin and Beppe – I’d go back in a heartbeat! But for now I will just cure my cold and leave you with some impressions of a wonderful city :)

Little pieces of your mind

I wrote the bulk of the descriptions for Singapore on the website Planetware.com sight unseen. Thanks for letting me take a peek.

I love the fish pictures.

I have always heard that Singapore is The Place to Go for food--sounds wonderful!

April 1st, 2009

I sure hope you are feeling much better!!!! What were some of the delights you had eaten?

April 1st, 2009

Just curious, but did you take that picture yourself in Singapore? The inscription looks like it's in Tamil, a language used in South India, and I wouldn't have expected to see it in Singapore.

My parents are Tamilian, and I've learned to sort of read and write the language, so I was a bit surprised I could read it.

EDIT Nicky: Yes, all the pictures were taken by ourselves in Singapore... After all there is "Little India", a part of the city with cultural elements from India and Tamil language has an official status in Singapore, too.

You've got some beautiful photos! I love the lizard. The fruit and veggies look great too. The dragon fruit look so ripe and yellow compared to the greenish ones I've seen for sale.

Singapore is a foodie's heaven; one that won't break the bank either. My parents just came home from Austria and I excitedly unwrapped a copy of Delicious Days they brought for me (On my request! None of the bookstores here in Canada carried it). But alas, unfortunately they got me the German version. I almost cried a little because I can't read a single word! The photos and layout are beautiful though :)

EDIT Nicky: Oh that is too bad ;( But my book (the English version) is available via Amazon.com, maybe this is an option for you?

How long did you say the flight was?

Isn't it wonderful exploring a new country? Particularly ones like Singapore where there's such a mix of cultures... and great food! I'm an Australian currently in the Philippines with my mum's side of the family, a country with very different food, but many similar cultural influences. What is the must-try Singaporean dish in your opinion?

EDIT Nicky: Ahhh, where should I start? We loved simple Roti Prata with Curry for breakfast, as well as Chicken Murtabak! And - of course - a bowl of Katong Laksa!!

April 9th, 2009

Thanks for sharing those pictures...makes me miss home! I'm definitely going down to the Singapore Day Serene mentioned this month for my fix!

It was quite amusing seeing pictures of the black chicken again. My mum used to boil them in a soup with goji berries and a whole load of other herbs because it's meant to make a good tonic.

Pleased to see you ate well in Singapore :)

You will have to make a trip to Malaysia if you like Singapore; if you have any hesitations, I am sure Eating Asia and I will be able to convince you. ;)

April 14th, 2009

Every picture's remind me so much about home!
I am from Malaysia, just North of Singapore.
Picture #23 showing a lady removing clam shells, it's one seafood that hardly find in Norh America. I dislike it when I was a kid, but I miss it now...

Wow, awesome photos! Great food also.

I like Thai food:-)

April 19th, 2009

I seconded Rasa Malaysia & Eating Asia :-) Malaysia is just across the Tebrau Straits from S'pore.

From Johor (the Asia Continent ends in a large wetland, Tanjung Piai, known as Southernmost End of Asian Continent) up to Perlis (smallest states in Malaysia), just at the border of Southern Thailand. There are 13 states to venture through; 11 in Peninsular M'sia and 2 in Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak). Food ranges from Asian, Eurasian to Orang Asli (indigenous minority people).

Cheers...
