Freezin' for a reason

Zzzzzz. Oooops, no I haven’t been hibernating & thanks for your patience… but some of our suitcases are still unpacked and major case of jetlag is yet to be overcome. But my bags were also loaded with lots of delicious foods, tons of inspiration and a new recipe is already in the making. Meanwhile have a peek at the below photo, any idea what reaches out there and perhaps you want to take a guess, where we’ve been?

EDIT: I’m impressed, you guys are good – I didn’t know about Buddha’s Hand before our trip… And some extra points for Julie and Joanna, the picture was indeed taken at DEAN & DELUCA in Soho, well spotted!

Little pieces of your mind

I know where you were but didn't think these would be there! I know these from Sicily, they are cold cedro, and this is the "finger" variety, also called Buddha's hand. The segments of the citrus fruit develop separately and consist almost only of peel (no pulp), which in this case is good, because it is very perfumed and tasty. I have only eaten them dried and/or candied - yummy. Did you eat them fresh? How were they? I also know that in earlier times they mixed it with wine and drank it as an antidote to certain poisons, but nowadays, luckily, the lovely Sicilian wines are enjoyed without this bitter stuff!

Was it someplace exotic?

That's a Buddha's hand, or fingered citron. It's got a pretty wide range, almost any warm-temperate, from Southern California to Japan to China to northern India.

December 16th, 2008
Martin

That's a hand of buddha. I don't know where you've been though, I've seen those at Whole Foods in Washington, DC before.

That's a Buddha's hand, or fingered citron. It's got a pretty wide range, almost any warm-temperate region, from Southern California, to China, and across to northern India. Since the signage is in English, I'll guess you were in SoCal?

Adrienne

It's Buddha's hand!!! Did you go to India or perhaps Southeast Asia?

December 16th, 2008

Buddha's hand citron. Beautifully aromatic, mostly rind. Often they are placed in a room or in a cupboard just for the scent.

December 16th, 2008

Granville Island, Vancouver BC? That there's a Buddha's hand!

December 16th, 2008

I know...I know. I posted about it a month ago when I came across it in Whole Foods. It's a buddha's hand. I've got the history on my blog. http://foodalogue.blogspot.com/search/label/buddha%27s%20hand

Those are buddha hands! They're a citrus.

As for where you've been, my guess is the Univeristy of California, Riverside. We're famous for our citrus research facility. :)

December 17th, 2008

So funny: yesterday evening I had a tasting and in one wine from Sicily we all smelled Buddha's Hand and then it turns out a couple of my guests from California are good friends of the makers of Hangar One Vodka and that was why they knew of this fruit. Gotta taste that vodka!

December 18th, 2008

Looks like the bottom of an Octopus. Somehow I'm sure this is a vegetable or fruit...but that's my best guess.

December 18th, 2008

It is Buddha's Hand for sure.
