October 7th
2008
These days I especially have a wish for one little skill: a very readable, pleasing to the eye and charming handwriting. Whenever somebody asks me to sign a copy of my book I'm a bit hesitant, because I know my handwriting just too well, and it is about as far from pretty as it can get. Heck, I try my best to make up for the messy writing by whit and charm, but when my grandpa called me the other day to inquire about what I had written in his book, it dawned on me that I failed. It sucked.
Anyway... if you're up for a little guessing game yourself and are willing to 'decipher' one of the following photos, you may be in for a delicious treat (including a scrawly signature, if you insist). So while I'm traveling and am away visiting dear friends, the comment section remains open and is awaiting your suggestions on what these pictures show. Drop a note until October 14th 2008 and do not forget to add a valid email address as well. Everybody with at least one correct answer goes to the pool of candidates from which Oliver will pick three random entries (manually, no voting machines from the ETC are involved ... ;-), who will receive a copy of my book (either in German or English language) - as long as you live on this planet. Happy guessing!

Am I cute? But what am I?

No, this wasn't supposed to happen. Another very simple cake from my childhood... but which?
Update:
Thank you all for participating! The fruit shown in the first picture is indeed a rose apple (and comes with many more names, the second one shows my last and failed attempt at baking a what we refer to as a butter cake (basically a sheet cake made from yeast dough with butter and (cinnamon) sugar on top. It all looked good until my grandpa called me on the phone to share some exciting news... and I completely forgot about the cake. Quite inedible, from the oven into the trash. I was pretty impressed, that some of you even guessed the cake right (and I wasn't impressed any less by the fact, that so many of you knew that I make sponge cake rolls quite often...). Oliver has already picked three book winners (randomly) and I will contact them via email over the next days and annonce them here over the upcoming weekend. So check your mailboxes, guys and gals :)
the first looks like a mis-formed apple and the second looks like gingerbread gone a bit wrong.
The first image is an apple (?) and the second image is Raspberry Sponge Cake Roll :)
Red Bush Apple? (Syzygium suborbiculare)
Burnt Gingerbread Cake?
Is it Java apple? or "Java rose, rose apple, water apple, jambu?" because they all refer to the same fruit.
If I am right about the name, then It is a very common fruit in Taiwan (and I am a Taiwanese). And as the name says, it tastes a bit like apple and pear, and it's quite sweet. Southern Taiwan have special breed of this which we sometimes call "Black Pearl." :D
BTW, congratulations to your new book~~
The top one looks like a Mountain Apple. Is there another name for them? I've only seen them on my grandma's tree in Hawaii... and I love them.
Geez... wikipedia says they're called wax apples, malay apples, water apples, plum rose...
I don't know what the cake is, but it still looks tasty.
a red pepper?
the top photo is a malay apple or mountain apple as we call it in Hawaii. I'm not too sure what kind of cake you were trying to bake, but hopefully you were able to salvage some of it!
The first photo is of a wax apple. They are delicious but I've only seen them in Taiwan and Thailand. Where did you get one!?!?!
is of a water-apple or jambu ayer, latin name Eugenia aquea. i grew up with these in both red and green varieties (the green was always sweeter, with a more subtle fragrance and flavour) but, now that i live in the US, i cannot find them. they do not grow here and are too fragile to survive the transpacific journey.
Cashew Fruit?
The first picture: an apple?
The second: carrot cake?
the first picture is a jambu! but i can't for the life of me figure out what the burnt cake is!
Is the cake a simple sponge to make a roll cake? I love them with fresh raspberries and whipped cream!
I would guess that the first photo is of a rose apple! Yum!
1) wax apple?
Well, the first image is of a bell fruit. I'm positive.
the first one's a jambu! i'm not sure what it's called in english, but i had a jambu tree outside my house growing up.
i'm not sure what the second picture is, but i'm guessing it's chocolate cake?
Pic 1- Wax jambu/water apple?
Pic 2- A chocolate-cherry-prune cake?
It's a java apple! I had to look its name up in English. But I had these while I was in Hong Kong over the summer. They are delicious. As for that beautifully charred cake, I will guess.. a simple yellow cake. :)
Is this a seed of the tropaeolum? Not sure what it is called in English, but literally translated from my language: East-Indian Cherry?
Is this a seed from Tropaeolum? Literally translated from Dutch: East-Indian Cherry?
Could be a pepper? And a coconut cake??
Ja! ja!! I really don't know but i want to give you a comment!!! Good Travel!!!
Bye!
The first picture looks like a mangostan fruit (Garcinia mangostana)
lg schaukelpferd
I would say the top one is what we call a "mountain apple" in Hawaii. Goes by the scientific name Syzygium malaccense. It is a great fruit - one that I haven't had in a very long time.
The second one is unfamiliar to me...butterkuchen?
The first picture is a bell fruit, it's common in Asia. It's concentrated sweetness in one bite, one of my favorite fruits!
As for the second one I'll take a random guess. It's a brownie. ;)
Was bist du rotes Ding? Hm...
:)
uh, the burnt one is supposed to be a buttermilk cake... don't know about the other one
I am guessing the the first one is a pepper and the second one i spunge cake. I live in Sweden and would like the book in English.
The fruit we are looking at is a Chom-phu in Thailand or rose apple in english in german we call it a Rosenapfel. It is a common fruit in South east Asia and well known especially in Thailand. The taste is sweet crunchy and very refreshing.
Ooh! The first one's one of my favourite fruits. It's called the Jambu Air in M'sia or Rose Apple in some other countries. This species: Syzygium samarangense.
And while I don't know what cake it is in the second pic, I like the smoky flavour of slightly charred food :)
I say... the first is some sort of pepper! No clue about the cake, though..
Enjoy the journey!
Oh OH!
The first one is a wax jambu AKA Syzygium samarangense (or ahem, water apple).
Growing up there was a tree by the driveway, we could only get through a few bites before the waxiness overcame and they were discarded, pegged over the fence and into a neighbouring paddock. I was ever-so excited when I realised that these fruits were popular in Asia, with a little chilli and salt, their waxiness transforms, becomes refreshing, strangely.
The second one is delicious cake. mmmm carbony.
Have a good trip!
The first photo shows a rose apple. We called it jambu air (literally 'water guava') here in Malaysia.
The fruit pictured is known as sugar apple, java apple, or water apple. It's native name is "trai man." I used to snack on them all day long.
water apple/jambu-- one of my favourite fruits, my family in our short foray into batam as a potential home had a jambu tree in the backyard and it was home to a nest of angry ants which conveniently sits itself next to the ripest jambu on the whole tree...... sorry about the runaway sentence, i love the fruit and sorely miss it. my other guess is completely random, carrot cake?
Well let me see, the firt one looks like a small fruit that we have here in Brazil calls Pitanga. But unfortunally i dont no the name in english. The other one, i think is what we call "pão-de-ló" or simply a softy cake made with lots of eggs and is a base to most of fruit cakes. But who know the name in english!! Probably i guess wrong both of them but woth it trying! Kisses and congrats again for your book.
ps: the firt one looks like as well a small pepper. ;-P
My guess is that the top picture is of a persimmon.
Congratulations on your book! If I don't win a copy, it will be on my birthday and Christmas list!
Hi,
If your handwriting is the way you say it is, you have taken the first step to becoming a doctor.
Regards,
Dr. Ashok Koparday
1. Pitanga (Surinam Cherry, Brazilian Cherry, or Cayenne Cherry)?
2. Chocolate-orange cake?
hi, we tried the green parmesan spread recipe yesterday evening and loved it. as soon as i pick up your cook book on the weekend we will be trying some more stuff. eymy didn't want to leave her copy with us. it's a wonderful book. congratulations again, regards from vienna, erika & georg
is it an apple?
I know the first one is called Water Apple. The cake is probably Butter Cake?
The fruit is a Love Apple (aka Java Apple, Water Apple, Mountain Apple, Rose Apple, and Bell Fruit.)
The cake is a sponge cake roll?
I'm hoping it is! Pick me :D
lese immer gern euren blog....
mi
deutscher name: ROSENAPFEL
first is a cranberry?
second applesauce cake?
It's a cored apple.
The first picture looks like a wax apple (Syzygium samarangense) to me. I think I've eaten one once years ago...
The second picture looks like a spice cake of some sort.
the cute fruit is jambu air! or syzygium samarangense/wax apple. I never fail to gobble them up in when I'm back in malaysia.
the 2nd picture, I would say that could have been a swiss roll... raspberry sponge cake roll?
#1 - pomegranate?
#2 - a very burnt [raspberry] sponge cake roll??
Looks like this red sour berry that grew wild in our back yard in Santa Barbara, Ca. I, for the life of me, can't remember the name so I will just guess: Manzanita Berry?
Hmm, this looks a lot like a fruit I ate in Taiwan. I believe it is sometimes called a rose apple? As for the cake, I haven't the foggiest.
I definitely think that top photo is a Hawthorne Berry... used to eat a lot them dried while I lived in China. But your burnt cake :( I can't quite guess yet.....
Oh man, I'm crossing my fingers for the signed book....
the fruit called 'jambu air ' in indonesian. and it called water apple in english .
I love your site, it's so inspiring and beautiful. I'm going to give the mystery photos a guess. The first is a rose apple (probably Syzygium samarangense). Oh, your poor cake! I think it might be your grandma's sponge cake.
Enjoy your travels!
Hello! The first one's easy as I grew up eating them. It's what people in Malaysia and Singapore call "jambu", "jambu air", or "red jambu" (there's a green variety which is guaranteed to be sweet too).
It has a spongy texture inside and we love to dip it in a homemade sauce:
2 tbsp dark soy sauce
2 tbsp water
1 tbsp fine sugar
2 chopped/crushed chillipadi (birdseye chilli)
Best enjoyed fresh out from the fridge.
Cheers,
Sherine
Hi, I hope my answers are correct and if they are, pls pick me for your book (in English pls)!
Answer to 1st Q: red bell pepper
Answer to 2nd Q: Chocolate Cake
is the first photo a "lian-wu"? that's what we call it in chinese. i looked up the english translation and it's either a bell fruit, waxed apple, or jambu. so many names!
The top picture is that of a fruit called water apple. It is pretty commmon in India and SE Asia
I am a rose apple
Difficult...difficult. First I thought the pictures show an apple and a brownie. But now I think, it's not an apple, but another fruit, like a passion fruit.. a coadunate passion fruit. Well, I'm wrong again... I'm not sure, if I have ever seen something like that. Hmmm... it also can be a mushroom or a chestnut...or... well, I have to think about it again...
Well, I know one anyway, so guess I'm in the race! The top photo is a rose apple, the bottom I'll guess is grandma's sponge cake roll. Poor grandma!
Could this be an apple and a burnt spice cake? "Pain de Epices"?
Second one looks like a "Fantakuchen" but I'm not sure about the first picture. Maybe a (caved out) red quince?
I think that little fruit looks like the bottom of a bell fruit (or wax apple). We call it Makopa here in the Philippines. There are a lot of names for it in different places actually.
I might be way off the mark here but something tells me the first picture is a cherry and the second Favourite Cake no. 99.
Your blog is fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi,
your website is really cool, and I love your recipes, especially the one with the spaghetti with lime and shrimps.
Therefore I would love to get a copy of your book!
Now my guess:
the first picture shows a "Red Java Apple", while the second one is showing one of your favorite cake from your childhood a "Biskuitroulade", well actually the preliminary stage of a "Roulade" or maybe a "Raspberry Sponge Cake Roll".
Hope my guess was right.
=)
Intriguing.. not sure what that cake is (pound cake?) but that fruit looks like a water apple.
roseapple- can be commonly found in asia. e.g. in thailand known as chomphu.
I'm going to go with a roasted apple for the top picture, and some kind of cinnamon cake for the bottom? I love how the "apple" looks if it is indeed an apple, and although I don't like apples myself this picture makes me willing to give them another try!
Tatjana
PS: Ich liebe diesen Blog - meine Oma hatte ganz ähnliche Rezepte, deshalb lasse ich mich beim Lesen auch immer wieder mal dazu inspirieren, meine Kindheitserinnerungen in der Küche aufleben zu lassen
Is this maybe a cranberry or the European version Preißelbeere?
And the cake seems quite simply to be you recently posted "Yeast cake with cherries and schmant". I think I can just make out the sunken in cherries ...
By the way - just discovered your site - love it! Very inspiring.
Kati
The first photo is of a Tambis / Makopa / Curacao / Rose or Malay Apple. :) Oh how I love the ones I ate in Taiwan. Green in colour, not the traditional pinkish hue we have in the Philippines.
Hi Nicky,
the first picture is a rose apple.
Have a nice trip.
Regards
Sandra
I would like to say just a word: Splendid.
Your kitchen and your words are perfect.
I'm Sorry for my english so bad !!!
Hello!
I'm guessing the second one is the sponge for the roll cake right? I hope I'll be lucky enough to get a copy of your book. Wish you all the best!
Hmm...I'm not quite sure at all! My first thought on the first one was an apple, but the cute is throwing me off.
Actually, I just surfed on to let you know that YAY!!! I just received a note from Amazon saying that your book is finally on it's way to me in San Francisco. Hurray!!!!
The first pic is of "Macopa" . Also known as, "Malay Rose Apple", 'Rose Apple" "Mountain Apple" and "Water-apple", to name a few. The last picture is of your favourite Jam Sponge Roll....too bad you burnt the sponge ;-(
The fruit is a macopa or a tambis (or a curacao, as may be called in other countries) and I think the burnt baked goody is a banana bread. I hope I'm right.
That's a water apple! In Malaysia, we call it a 'jambu'.
Hello from Jakarta, Indonesia!
Here are my answers:
- the fruit: we call it 'Jambu Air' in Indonesian and I think it's called 'Water Apple' or 'Rose Apple' in English.
- the cake: flourless chocolate cake?
BTW, this is a great site, both in contents and in looks! And just in case I win ;), please send the English version of your book (I just returned from living for 22+ years in California). To think about it, winning this contest would be the *only* way I could get my hands on your book, since bookstores here have very, very limited selections of foreign language materials :(
Thank you,
Tessa
Hi Nicky,
I'd love to have signed copy of your book, I have looked at it at Amazon but have not yet managed to buy it :-) So the first picture show "rose apple" or "chom-pu", I have eaten it in Thailand.
Thank you for the game and best regards from Berlin,
Partisan
I've no hope of winning anything, but the pictures look too delicious and inviting, and since my mouth is all watery, I simply MUST leave a comment ... No idea about that phantastic fruit that looks like a very special sort of apple, but I WANT the cake on the second picture to be a chocolate cake because that's exactly what I'd love to have for dessert right now!
the top photo is a chompuu or rose apple!
Ithink the burnt Thingi is (was) a spongecakeroll to be. I have no clue what the red thing could be. maybe a dried apple?
I would like to have an sighned book! ;)
I recognise that!!! It's "jambu air" where I come from in Malaysia. Literally translated to water apple aka rose apple and apparently a million other nicknames. They taste so good on their own or in a salad. The water content in it makes it a great thirst quencher. Where did you find it??
nice!
I am not sure on the first one it is cute but no idea what it is however, the second looks like what we call Wacky Cake (made with no flour and eggs) it is extremely moist and delicious and my daughter's favorite. The top is shiny like that and it is oh so good!
Hi Nicky,
It's a wax apple/rose apple or known as 'jambu air' (water guava) in Malay. Haven't had this in ages! Not too sure 'bout the cake though. Apple/chocolate cake?
Great blog! This fruit is commonly called "wax apple," grown in tropical regions in Asia with hot climates. It's very juicy and sweet. Delicious!
the first pic is a "water guava" - that's the direct translation from Malay ie. "jambu air" but I believe its also called "water/wax apple" in other parts of the world :)
Hi Nicky!
The first one is the bottom of a rose apple and the second one is...a burnt brownie??
Ooh, I do hope I'll be eligible for your English book (signed, of course!).
Have a great vacation and hope you'll bring back lots of delicious pictures to share with us!
I love rose apples!! They're my favourite fruit to eat when I visit Taiwan. But The cake stumps me. I'll take a wild guess and say...Banana? ^_^
I love rose apples! :)
A wax apple. Eat it as a fruit, or make a salad with it, or stir-fry it with celery. Crunchy delicious.
i'm no detective but it looks like top image is of a red berry and the bottom picture is of a burnt cake ;)
Hello,
its latin name is Syzygium malaccense, in english it's called malay apple and in french it's pomme d'eau ( or jambose rose)!! but I couldn't find its german name.
hope to be picked up.
thanks
Mlle Hua Cheng From France
hi there! i'm from singapore (the sunny island in south east asia). we see alot of the fruit in the first pictures. it's called jambu air in malay. it's like guava but not quite. it tastes a little like apple. here, and similarly in parts of malaysia, we cut them up and eat it with soy sauce.
i bet your book is amazing =)
Mein Lösungsverschlag:
1. Cashew-Frucht, 2. Brownies
I think the first picture is a wax apple/bell fruit.
I believe it is a rose apple! I tried my first one when I lived in Hong Kong. Now I live in London and haven't seen one around yet.
Oooh, could be a medlar (Mispel auf Deutsch) with the seeds scraped out or something related to it.
The burnt cake, a Kaeseplaatz (as it's called in Frankonia), a flat Quarkblechkuchen, maybe??
i'm taking a shot at this :
1) having known it all my life as jambu air, but a quick google tells me its english equivalent is rose apple or water apple
2) chocolate cake?
The first photo is a subtropical fruit that's variously known as a wax apple, java apple or bell fruit. I'm guessing the second photo is gingerbread!
i think the first image is a red java apple viewed from its top!
the second image - i dont know. it looks to similar to many of my cakes that i dont want to haphazard a guess :P
a rose apple?
and a sponge for a roll-cake, e.g. a jelly roll?
I don't know! But, if no one else knows can I get a book anyway??
Either way, it's on my christmas list! Thanks for the contest!
Hi Nicky,
1st pic: in my country Indonesia, it is called 'Jambu Air' and I search in the internet for it's english name, I found this: Water Apple. This fruit available in white, pink and red flesh.
2nd pic: is that an overbaked sponge cake for your raspberry sponge cake roll? :P
I wish I'm the lucky one.. :)
the cute fruit's a wax jambu!!
no idea what's the cake though.
i'd loooove to get a copy of your book so here goes:
1st photo - It's a wax jambu! One of my favourite fruit of all time!
2nd photo - This one, I'm clueless. A burnt sponge cake roll?
But still.. pick my entry, pick my entry!
no 2 looks like a burnt "bisquitroulade"...
Its the popular Thai fruit called the rose apple. And the burnt cake...hmm...a chocolate sheet cake?
Oh, I so hope to get a signed copy of your book!
I wish you all the best for its launch!
First picture - is it a rose apple? also known as makopa (in the Philippines), bell fruit, java apple, water apple, or mountain apple.
Second picture - no idea. maybe a chocolate brownie cake???
Picture 1: Water apple
Picture 2: Flourless chocolate cake?
:)
Ups.. sorry.. I didn't notice that commenting here should wait for moderation.. please ignore my 2nd post..
1st pix: That's a water apple or 'jambu' or' 'jambu air' as it's known around Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
2nd pix: sheet cake? :-P
I think i know that first one.. is it a water apple? :)
I used to get that often from the fruit shops in Singapore.. we eat that together with this sweet/sour plum powder... yummy..
As for the second one.. looks like the beginning of a Sponge cake roll gone wrong :P
P.S.. I saw ur cook book at the Wittwer here in Stuttgart last weekend.. It looks good!! Congrats! :) I have it on my christmas wishlist already ;)
The first picture is Syzygium aqueum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syzygium_aqueum). Its common names include Water Apple, Bell fruit, Water cherry, and Watery rose apple. In my country it is called Jambu Air (http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jambu_air).
Hope I am right, and may become the lucky one... as I love your works, your photographs, not to mention your recipes!
Hi... photo #1 is of a tropical fruit that is very hard to find in the USA, in fact I don't think it's grown here at all. But in Taiwan where I spent summers as a kid, I loved these lightly sweet, very juicy and slightly crunchy fruits. I don't know what they are called in English or German, but in Mandarin Chinese we call it "Lian Wu". Thank you for the chance to recall this happy food memory :)
Is it Gewürzkuchen?
Hi Nicky!
We call that jambu in Singapore. Although I think it goes by the name of Wax Apple or Rose Apple.
Hope I pass the math question!
hey! that must be jambu! or water apple = bell fruit (musste der englische Name in Wikipedia nachschlagen though ha!). That photo brings back childhood memories, growing up in indonesia, eating jambu on hot afternoons after school.
And the second photo... hmm... schokokuchen maybe?
Love your blog. Love the book journey. And I have no right answars about the pictures. I guess 1. one is an apple. And the 2. one doesn't have s thing with coconut?
It's a water apple, or jambu, as we like to call it here in South East Asia. There used to be a Jambu tree where i grew up and we'd pluck them off and have them as afternoon thirst quenchers.
Don't know if I qualify for the draw since I'm halfway round the world in sunny Singapore, but it's worth a shot...=)
I have what people call "charming" handwriting, but not very people can read it upon first glance. They think that I'm messing with them by writing in ancient script! Haha! Readable and charming is definitely a good combination when it comes to penmanship. Either way, your writing is your own, and I'm sure that many will value it as an autograph.
I'll take a guess at the first photo. It's wax jambu or water apple. I think in some other places, they also call that fruit 'water guava'. =)
For question 1: its a jambu or rose apple :-)
question 2: chocolate cake? haha
Hi Nicole,
First, many congratulations for your “baby”. Second, I still love games so I’m up for the guessing game. My answers are very wild guesses really, the first photo, no idea, I don’t even know if it’s a fruit or a vegetable, some sort of red chili pepper maybe? Although it’s white inside so probably it’s not... well, dying to know what it is; and the second, ahem, not sure neither ;)... but I think it could be a chocolate brownie?
Anyway, just to say thanks for your initiative and wish you loads of good luck & happiness, I’ll keep lurking around your blog!
Cheers,
Blanca
i think its a water apple. Scientific name is Myrtaceae. We have it alot in Malaysia which we call it as "Jambu air" in Malay.
its a very juicy fruit and sweet too !!
comes in green also..... ^^
LG
The top photo is a "lianwu" in Chinese, or a wax apple in English. I live in Taiwan and I cannot get enough of these when they are in season.
the first one is called Jambu Air and the second, hmmm .. my guess will be Caramel Brownie? :-)
the top image is a mountain apple
No comments in a week! I guess we are all stumped. The first thing is a fruit. It reminds me a bit of a rosehip or maracuja after I pick all the seeds out. And the sheet cake could be chocolate or a tragically burned buttermilk creation. I can't wait to hear the answers!
The cute red thing on top - I think it is a persimmon. Keep up the great work, love your blog!
Hmmm, the first photo looks like the inside of a chestnut to me, sort of...
The second one? Well, I'll take a wild guess with (Blackened) Lemon Cake.
if i translated in english verbatim, it's water guava (jambu air)! there are plenty of them in indonesia, my home country, and they're pink and green too. it's one of my favorite fruits of course...esp. for fruit salad with spicy crushed peanut sauce ;-)
i've been loving your blog, photos and everything else in between...thanks. i hope i win, if not...bests for your first book and your career.
First one is a mountain apple (at least that's what we call them in Hawaii). They taste like roses!
Now I'm homesick....

Hmmm.. top one is a melted candle?
And the cake? I have no idea, but it reminds me of the applesauce cake my mom always made when I was a kid, so maybe that's it! Only burnt...
