Why is it, that whenever I buy an organic lettuce, I find one - not two or three - just one of those little critters in there? I think I'm on to something here, I'm seeing this grandpa-type old man sitting in front of an old wooden desk, gently placing one single snails on each head of lettuce leaving the greenhouse. Not without whispering a "Travel save, my dear - and don't snack on it too much!".
What to do with them?! I don't have a garden nor do I want to sacrifice my herb shelf, and all our neighbors are nice people...
Aw that's so cute... Haha You should buy a little case for them and feed them old lettuce :)
Drown them in beer. If you're gonna drown, beer seems a good liquid to do it in.
Better on the lettuce, than on your dish salad. Once I had a creatur like the one on the photo on my salad dish at the restaurant. Obviously, I didn't like ...
The description is wonderfull, I can imagine the old man, with tears in his eyes saying goodbye to every snail.
Just teach them to sing and dance. Big fun for everyone!

The whole film is great!
Name her Betty and adopt her :)
hey, at least you know it's REALLY fresh! Great pic.
Do you have a bigger version of this pic?
Why? Becuase it's organic! No Pesticide, no insecticide ... I would much rather slugs on my salad than chemicals. Why complain?
EDIT Nicky: Hi Melanie, if you read my post closely I did not complain about the snail itself, I just don't know what to do with them as I don't have a garden ;)
Ha...ha...ha...although I have a garden I wouldn't invite your new little friend... :-)
Aw look at that little guy ... too bad he's in your lettuce though :\
I'd call it free-range escargot and eat it. Well, if I ate such slimy things. (It's a slug, btw, not a snail. I think it's my state animal. *sigh*)
EDIT Nicky: Thanks for the hint with the slug - I unintentionally "germanized" it, we use the same word for the ones that carry their house on the back and the ones that don't ;)
Confessions of a slug suffering gardener: I would k* it :-) blue granules or scissors
[...] Days contemplates what is the appropriate number of snails in your lettuce. I vote [...]
i have a childhood trauma with slugs. i actually spend my days, making sure (beer, salt or, blue crums) that they stay away from my herbs garden and hortensias.
I love your site, but the sight of the creature took my apetite away and just gave me the
creeps
Those guys drive me nuts. At least you have some lettuce left to find . . . in my garden, they scarf it all!
OK, now we know that Ulrike doesn't like Walt Disney movies or cute snails. But, I must say, a plump snail like that is just asking to be included in the daily menu. I say forget the blue crystals or scissors. Execution with garlic and butter is much more humane--and tasty.
I had a close encounter once with a caterpillar and a sandwich, it was awful! At the moment, whenever I get an organic lettuce in the vegetable box, they seem to be covered and I mean COVERED in aphids. To the point where you can't even wash them off!
Pop the little slugs into your garbage can and send them off to the city dump where they will be well-fed and useful.
:-P
I find an earthworm few days ago in my lettuce! 8-I
Great images!!!!
Cheers,

Wait until you collect a dozen then start thinking about escargot.
as info, it's an invasive species - it's a european slug - so kill it regardless of your choice how. if you find a banana slug or a native slug to your region, then let it go. most natives live in wooded areas.
I just got a lettuce and it does not have one but many many many snails!!!! It makes it gross to clean the lettuce when you keep on running into these disgusting little things

Ha ha thats cute, but not in my food though.
