I just told someone yesterday that potatoes are my favourite vegetable. I roast sweet potato wedges with olive oil and salt and pepper and my kids think they're eating french fries, so everyone's happy. And I love mashing new potatoes. I just boil them and mash them, skins and all, with butter, buttermilk, and fresh ground pepper.

I'm not so sure that the love for potatoes can be claimed a german thing. Only in Ireland I saw someone have mashed potatoes AND french fries AND boiled potatoes with their meal.

Funny thing i just had potato gratin.
Must be a german thing, i don't know any other nation that eats that much potato.
I love it in any way: cooked, mashed, fried, you name it.

i love potatoes as well - such a great vegetable! my favorite sort is called Adretta, an East German sort reared in the 1950s. My father used to plant them when he started to work for one of the East German LPGs (Landwirtschaftliche Produktionsgenossenschaft, agricultural co-op). Since then he plants them every year in our garden - and our entire family loves to eat them...

My favorite non-traditional (Italian) potato salad is made from slow-roasted new potatoes quartered and tossed with a vinaigrette of chopped mint, loads of olive oil, a good dose of chopped garlic, kosher salt and pepper. The mint and warm potatoes are wonderful complements to one another.

I just bought some Russian Banana fingerlings for a change; they were delicious from the grill. I make a foil packet, add some washed potatoes, whole cherry tomatoes and sliced red onion. Then I give everything a good dousing of olive oil, garlic salt and black pepper. Grill off of the flame, on medium heat for about 30 minutes. It's unbelievable and quick.
