Ooops I did it again...

… and killed Mr. Basil. Water used to make him so happy, not anymore though. He had a great life while it lasted on our kitchen window sill, for almost 2 months – and even set a new record! He rocked.

delicious days daily

Little pieces of your mind

so sad...

April 24th, 2008

hahaha... Your post made me laugh. I have the same issues with basil, they're picky little things.

A minute of silence please for Mr. Basil.... Basil doesn't like direct water, next time try filling the water in the planter (? Übertopf), so his feet are wet and he can drink whenever he wants to. That should make him happy!

Happens to me all the time. I have another question, can you eat the little white basil blossoms?

Hmmm... too sad.... but same here... My Mr. Basil - errr no my Ms. Basil is still alive but I think it's just some kind of coma vigil... but that's life - if you can't drink like a man you're fcuked...

Poor Mr. Basil! By the way, DDD is a great idea. At least we won't be deprived of your delicious photography while you work on your book. Do remember to rest though!!!

@ Evi
Jeep it's possible, you can eat them.

April 24th, 2008

Indoor basil dies, full stop. That's what they're made for. Your only chance is using it up faster than it dies. 2 months is definitely a new record.

April 24th, 2008

A few years ago a friend of mine told me what Hande said: if you dont water it from the top it wont die. It works.

April 24th, 2008

was he properly used? did the leaves give its good taste to your food? well, mr. Basil had a productive life and made people happy... that is a good life for sure!

April 24th, 2008

Bye, Mr Basil...R.I.P. in pesto heaven...

April 24th, 2008

my organic basil (ja! natürlich) would live almost forever - in the kitchen - if i wouldn't eat him. i don't know why. never had that problem but often heard of it. and: i don't care (he doesn't, too), from where which amount of water comes... but he's very, very thirsty.

April 24th, 2008

I love the smell of a basil plant. I sometimes buy them at a natural foods store I shop at just for decoration-even when I don't plan to cook with it.

Of course cooking with leaves from a fresh basil plant is always more fun than using dried.

In addition, my cat loves the smell and it drives her absolutely nutty! I think basil is the new catnip!

April 24th, 2008

"Oops, i did it again..." ;-) Totally ditto that phrase. That is EXACTLY what I think when my basil dies on me!

April 25th, 2008

Observing that my Miss Basil (a Thai) resting on our kitchen window was struggling for life, I transferred it to our shaded yard. It's been more than a year. Ms. Basil has given birth to plenty of offsprings.

r.i.p

April 27th, 2008

sadly my basil only grows healthy in my work... not in my kitchen... can you imagine?

After killing a few basil plants myself I actually did some research on this and apparently alot of herbs don't actually like kitchens. Something about the heat and, surprisingly, the smells turns them off. Also, you have to be careful not to overwater them. If the leaves are yellowing, it means they are getting too much water. So, I've been growing some basil in a pot on my balcony and it's actually doing quite well.

Oh my! Your post was funny, but I liked the comments of the others too. I guess I've been smothering my Mr. Pre-Pesto's...they always turned yellow and then nodded their little heads down to the table and peacefully gave up on me. I always thought I just had a black thumb, or I didn't get enough light in my north-facing kitchen window, or plants in general have declared war on me and refuse to co-exist in the same house as me. Nice to know I'm not alone :)
