Great to get so many ideas. Thanks. I notice "stuff" gets all over the kitchen when I wash the meat - spreading germs etc. Also, I find the pre-washing starts to "work" on the meat and spoil it for the next step. Glad I wasnt the only one not sure of this point. Enjoy 2010.

I'm trying to find out why there is so much blood in raw meat now a days.
It never used to be that way. When I asked a butcher one time he said it was because it was not hung long enough for all the blood to drain out. That explanation was not good enough for me. I don't want to ever again rinse a whole chicken and get the blood out of the inside and then when I think it's done there's still running blood from the inside of the chicken. Any light on the subject?

I have always rinsed although recently I read that the reason not to is because the process of rinsing actually spreads more germs for the potential of salmonella. It will be left in the sink, possibly splashing on the counter, your sponge, and even your faucets. Just be sure to put a tsp. or bleach in a small bowl of water and clean up with it afterwards. If you don't want to take this precaution I would advise not rinsing your meats, especially poultry!

I have always washed off all meat and I think it is such a pain because i have to clean out all the dishes in the sink and then spray it out with bleach to get all the bacteria out if there is any. It is so much easier to just open the package and cook it. The chicken is slimy and the beef is always so red. Does anyone know if they put dye in the beef to make it really red? what is the slime on the chicken? it seems gross not to rinse.

I wash all meat because of what or who may have touched it on the outside, not the inside.
