i came here straight from amazon, having just looked at this book - what a coincidence! i am trying to restrain myself and only order a fraction of the books that tempt me... after your review, I am less convinced to buy it - but i've "saved it for later", to be sure ;-)

I own this and I wish that it too had more step by step insturctions as well as recipes. I mean there are some recipes in the back, but still. I did like the dessert section.

This is food as theatre, which does not really ring my bell. When cooking, I aim to please in a warm kitchen, rather than impress in a smart dining room, as that seems to me to more welcoming. When eating out too I want to be looked after, not dazzled by a chef's brilliance and originality. Indeed in my favourite restaurants, I usually eat the same thing each time. Too many restaurants forget that their primary job is hospitality. I suppose I am just a simple greedy person, and so I would always much rather have a bit more on my plate, than have it artfully arranged. In my opinion the most consistently appealing culinary tradition is Italian, and it is no accident that it is chiefly rooted in the domestic kitchen rather than a restaurant culture.

This is of course just my personal preference, and not meant as a criticism of those who enjoy this.

I try to avoid visiting Amazon's cookbook section, it's not healthy for my purse. What is it, that makes cookbooks so addictive???

I must say, after 6 years living in UK and now being moved back to Slovakia (my Brit. husband's idea of an adventure!) I must order my books to UK, have them sitting at my mum-in-law's and wait to pick them up on my next trip to UK. :(
I am glad to read your blog about lovely books and other things.
