We've had several hot days, really hot days. Days, that make everything inevitably go at a slower pace and drive even the biggest sun worshipper into the shades. Did I mention that most of the (older) buildings in Munich don't have AC? Yuck. Yep, it was one of those sweltering days and we were invited over to our friends apartment for dinner. Given the temperatures, neither one of us wanted to spend hours in the kitchen, so we all decided to make thin crust pizza with different toppings and have a few chilled Heineken to go with it. A light and easy option.

Morrocan Summer Salad

Dessert wise, we had a bit of a misunderstanding. I thought - no, I knew for a fact that we all agreed on N and I were to bring dessert. Seriously, I have perfect memory and would never have a wrong recollection *cough* (I can see N. rolling on the floor laughing...). Anyway, we ended with two different dessert that night. Häagen-Dazs ice cream with fresh passion fruit and Kristin's Moroccan orange melon summer salad, which was a real treat! The oranges tasted great despite the fact they're not in season. Needless to say, it ended up straight away on our very-soon-to-make-list. Fortunately, the weather has cooled down quite a bit the last days and we're back to more reasonsable temperatures.

So this morning we had it again, this time however without the Grand Manier. I think it works both ways (with and without) - in any event a very refreshing and delicious fruit salad - prepared and good to go in no time. Oliver

Orange Filet

Cut the flesh from the chilled melon into bite size pieces, removing and discarding the seeds and set aside. Filet oranges and place into bowl with the melon. Supreming oranges I find not difficult at all, it just takes a sharp knife...

For the dressing, combine freshly squeezed orange juice, cinnamon, and Grand Manier or Cointreau (optional). Finely chop mint leaves.

Add the chopped mint to the fruit, pour the dressing over the mixture and toss gently until everything is coated and evenly mixed. Veeeery refreshing!

Yum!!

The salad looks and sounds wonderful. As usual your photography make it look all the more appealing.

As it is winter here in the Antipodes, it'll have to wait till the days are warmer before i give it a go.

Great work guys!

Beautiful - and inspiring. As soon as watermelons really come into season here, I am going to try this. May I ask what camera you have? (I am in the market)

Hi yesil, Chubby Cat, diva, Ana, maria and J,
Thanks! :))

Hello plentyo'moxie,
Thank you. The camera, a Fuji Finepix 610, we bought roughly 1 year ago. With its 6 mpixels and features, I'd consider it "middle class", certainly in terms of the price tag. However, the price quality ratio I think is excellent! We already spend some thought on a SLR digital camera, but yet have to find the right one. And I'm not sure it'll justify the costs in the end...besides, we're so used to our Fuji, its quirks and light & exposure intricacies we are not too thrilled to start from scratch with a new camera, not yet at least ;)

Yes, it's too hot. To forget this heat, your recipe is very look. Besides it, it's too simple. I'll try it.

thanks for sharing! of course, and more to the point, it is the skill of the camera owner that makes such fine pictures. for me, with no such skills, i need to at least start with a decent cam.

I am amused by the juxtaposition of the food on our respective websites given our geographical locations. And it gives me time to consider what my spring and summer will bring to my culinary adventures. One of my husband's favourite desserts is vanilla ice cream and fresh passionfruit - a wonderful summer fruit, tangy and sweet such a simple addition. Down here one of the other traditional ways we like to present fresh passionfruit is drizzled on top of freshly whipped cream layered over a cake made completely of a meringue -white and crispy on the outside with fluffy clouds of marshmallow inside - a.k.a the pav or pavlova. When my summer comes I will have to remember to do a feature post on the ubiquitous pavola and the passionfruit.

Beautiful salad - the colors are so vibrant! We must be on the same wavelength recipe-wise, though I figured out how to get my melon into my dinner while you left it for dessert (and breakfast, apparently)! In any case, I wouldn't worry too much about the dessert misunderstanding - after all, better TWO desserts than NO desserts! ;)

Beautiful and so fresh!

Hi plentyo'moxi,
The results ultimately depend on the owner of a camera, that’s true. But it’s to an extend motivating and generally good to know, that the camera you want to buy or have bought has the potential to actually deliver the kind of pictures you are looking for ;)

Hi Lushlife,
Yes please do so, I’m all ears now :) Reading through your comment/summer menu, with every word, I’m getting more and more anxious to see and read about your pavola…

Hi Melissa,
Yep, my point. At least that’s what I said at the time, trying to quickly cover things up…;)

Considering that we're in our second week of a humidex reading of over 40 degrees celsius, this plate looks like an oasis! Perfect in every way, cool and vibrant all at once. And on a completley shallow note, I adore your spoons!
